Collection: The Smothers Brothers

There’s Mother Smothers’ favorite son, and then there’s the other one. Iconic comedy duo Tom and Dick Smothers made their way into American homes and hearts with their sibling banter and chemistry. The duo started performing in coffeehouses and clubs during the folk music revival in the late 1950s. Dick, who played bass, and Tom, who played guitar, used their musical talents and wit to woo audiences on shows such as “The Jack Paar Program” and “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.” In 1967, the pair got their own show on CBS, “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.” The show was seen as innovative and achieved critical and commercial success with its sketches, music and satirical political commentary. The brothers, being very outspoken on the political state of the US, pushed boundaries and advocated for social change, something that was not done on television at the time. Their show was canceled in 1969 and they went on to create various spinoff shows including “The Smothers Brothers Show 1975” and “The New Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” in 1988. The Smothers Brothers opened the doors for people to take social stances on national television, as well as bringing joy and laugher into the homes of millions of Americans.
