The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” was an American television variety show starring comedy duo Tom and Dick Smothers. The show premiered in 1967 on CBS and soon became a huge success for its political banter, playful sibling rivalry and popular musical and comedy guests. The show'swriters room launched the careers of Steve Martin, Rob Reiner and Bob Einstein aka Super Dave Osborne, with such guest stars as Pat Paulsen, Carol Burnett, Gallagher and George Carlin. A who's who of musical superstars included George Harrison, The Doors and Simon & Garfunkel and more. The Smothers Brothers found themselves in regular conflicts with CBS for their stance on social and political issues, such as the Vietnam war, civil rights and censorship. "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" was abruptly canceled on April 14, 1969. Even with the show's short run, The Smothers Brothers continue to be remembered as one of the most influential performers of their time with their commitment to challenging societal norms through comedy.
