Stand-up comedian and actor Redd Foxx is a fan-favorite amongst the Clown Jewels audience, and rightfully so. He got his start doing stand-up in the 1940s, performing his colorful and raunchy sets in nightclubs and theaters. He is known to be one of the first Black comedians to perform for white audiences on the Las Vegas Strip. He became a household name in 1972 with the premiere of “Sanford and Son” where he played Fred G. Sanford, named after his father and brother. The show was groundbreaking in portraying Black characters and themes, which helped to diversify TV programming altogether. Foxx went on to star in his own short-lived variety show titled “Redd Foxx Show.” The show included some of his friends in the business and former co-stars including Slappy White, Bob Einstein, Jo Marie Payton, Pat Morita, LaWanda Page and more. He released many different comedy albums, including “Jokes I Can’t Tell On Television” and “Funky Tales From A Dirty Old Junkman.” Redd Foxx has been named as an inspiration to many Black comics, including Richard Pryor and Chris Rock, for his groundbreaking roles and his influence on comedy is still felt by comedy lovers today.
