Dean Martin was the consummate entertainer. As a singer-actor-comedian, he rose to fame as half of the legendary comedy duo Martin and Lewis with Jerry Lewis. They soared to success together with their NBC radio series, The Martin and Lewis Show, which ran from 1948 to 1953. Their big television break when they appearance on the first episode of Ed Sullivan's show, "Toast of the Town" in 1948. When Martin transitioned to a solo career, he gained mass attention for his music, but never neglected his comedic talents. He and his fellow “Rat Pack” pals (Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford) became smash hits on the Las Vegas Strip. His smooth and charming delivery coined him “The King of Cool.” Martin launched his own variety series in 1965, “The Dean Martin Show.” From that show came the hit spinoff, “The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts.” Stars such as Foster Brooks, Don Rickles, Nipsey Russell and Phyllis Dinner were series regulars, taking turns roasting the person of the hour.
